Organised cruises with the PBYC provide opportunities for members to extend their experience and seamanship while enjoying the company of a group with similar interests

Apart from the enjoyment of sailing in new situations, members receive moral support and practical assistance if they face any difficulty. This does not remove the responsibility from the skippers for the safety of their vessel and crew and for the handling of all aspects of sailing the vessel, just as if they were not in the company of others vessels.

The Club provides these opportunities for its members to sail together and gather socially within enclosed waters as well as for longer cruises to Port Jackson and other destinations along the coast.

Any skipper should approach the Cruising Secretary or any other Committee member for advice if in doubt about any issues of a safety or operational nature.

The PBYC Committee can give an opinion to any member about the suitability of their vessel for a cruise in open waters. This may lead to a recommendation that they do not participate in a particular event in that vessel where it is considered that the vessel or its crew would be at unreasonable risk or may jeopardise the safety of other PBYC members participating in that event.

All PBYC members participating in a cruise are expected to offer assistance to any one of the vessels in the group if required. However, every skipper should proceed on a cruise with the expectation that, if in trouble, other participating vessels may only be in a position to inform others about the trouble being experienced.

Skippers should obtain and examine appropriate charts of areas to be visited. They should be familiar with coastal navigation techniques and ideally possess and be able to operate a GPS.

While visiting any anchorage or marina, members should remember that they are representing the PBYC and should not indulge in rowdy behaviour, leave litter on beaches nor generally behave in a manner likely to upset others.

Safety

All members are expected to know about, carry and maintain the required safety equipment applicable for the size of their vessel. Brochures are obtained from the Waterways Authority.

In situations regarding misbehaviour of persons, difficulties with moorings, and accidents not involving a fatality, the NSW Maritime Authority is to be contacted on 0418 976160 (Peter Chessel) or 0418 976023 (Steve Nugent).

In situations of break-in or theft or accidents involving the injury or possible injury to persons, the Broken Bay Water Police are to be contacted on 9979 4044 or 0412162093, Sydney Water Police on 1800 658 784 or 9692 5411, or Mona Vale Police on 9997 1444.

Both services can be called on VHF channel 16 or 27.88 mHz on channel 88.
